Turtles mostly closely related to crocodiles and birds and that the embryonic developments follow the latest hourglass model of vertebrate. An international research team led by the maker of the Riken center for developmental biology has developed a turtle. The structure of its shell differs from that of other armored tetrapods such as the armadillo and its shoulder blades are inside rather than outside the rib cage. Their embryonic development follows the latest hourglass model of vertebrate embryology1.



The international team, which included researchers from BGI and the Ensembl genome database project, I  establish the evolutionary position of the turtle based on its genome, which conserves information that can be tracked back to its evolutionary ancestors. To do this they sequenced and analyzed the genomes of two very different turtle species ( a Chinese soft shell turtle ) and the (green sea turtle). And they compared them with other vertebrates.

The result of the comparison was clear that the closest evolutionary relatives of turtles are crocodiles and birds from which they diverged about 250 million years ago. In their analysis of the turtle genome the researchers saw a large number of olfactory receptors but fewer taste receptors .Which shows that turtles have an amazing sense of smell.
They also investigated about shell and t again they found something new  the shell formation in turtles represents a transformation of vertebrate and ribs, normally associated with the formation of limbs.
